This study deals with the misuse of the Japanese conjunction “jaa” among Swedish speakers of Japanese. “Jaa” is the colloquial form of “soredewa” or “dewa,” which means “Then” This is uttered in response to the previous statement, implying “if that is the case, …” I have, however, found that the Swedish-speakers of Japanese inappropriately overuse “jaa”, especially beginning sentences with “jaa” when there is no previous statement indicating a “case” to refer to. This phenomenon has been observed in both beginner students and advanced students. From my experience in teaching students from various countries in the United States, this kind of misuse of “jaa” had not been observed. I suspect that the misuse stems from the fact that Swedish speakers use “jaa” as a direct replacement of “så” in Swedish. “Så” in Swedish is used more commonly and freely than “jaa” in Japanese. Collecting tokens in order to determine under what conditions and when Swedes use the Japanese conjunction “jaa” and Swedish conjunction “så” will determine if there is a correlation between the two. If the correlation is indeed found, it will help the Japanese teachers to teach Swedish students more efficiently.
