Can you apply after the deadlines listed above?

In some cases applications for a specific course or programme may remain open after the date listed above. In this case, the application portal will say "open for late applications." Please note that late applications are processed after admissions decisions for on-time applicants are published meaning that you will receive a decision at a later date.

What documents do you need to submit when applying?

The specific documents needed will depend on in which country you previously studied and the programme or course to which you are applying. More specific information can be found at

UniversityAdmissions.se - Country Specific Information

Usually applicants need to submit their completed upper-secondary results, university transcripts and diplomas (if applying to master's programmes), scan of passport ID page, and proof of English proficiency. Other documents may be required in specific instances.

Can you send application and/or supporting documents directly to Dalarna University?

All applications are submitted online through the application portal at:

www.universityadmissions.se

Supporting documents are submitted to University Admissions. Depending upon where you previously studied you may upload your documents or request your university to submit these directly to Universityadmissions.se

How much are the tuition fees?

EU/EEA citizens do not pay any tuition fees to study at Swedish universities.
The tuition fee for non-EU citizens is listed at the programme specific information on the Dalarna University website.

Starting in autumn 2025:
If you are admitted to a technical programme, the first semester tuition fee will be 75000 SEK.
If you are admitted to a social science programme, the first semester tuition fee is 48000 SEK.
If you are admitted to the GSRH programme, the first semester tuition fee is 84000 SEK.

If you are granted a scholarship from the Swedish Institute, you do not need to submit any payment.

How do you pay the tuition fee?

After your Notification of Selection Result (admissions letter) is available at universityadmissions.se, you will receive a notification when your invoice is available in Ladok (Sweden's nation-wide student registry system for the documentation of students' attendance and results). Dalarna University does not send a separate invoice, and you must find the invoice in Ladok by yourself.

When you log in to Ladok for the first time, you should use the same login details as those you use at universityadmissions.se

If you pay the tuition fee from another country outside Sweden, please use Dalarna University´s bank details below:

Bank: Danske Bank

IBAN: SE16 1200 0000 0128 1011 7659

Swift: DABASESX

If you have a Swedish bank account you can make payment to Dalarna University using Dalarna University's bank details below:

Danske Bank

Account number: 12810117659

Please do not forget to add the reference number on the invoice when you make the payment so we can match it to you. You may additionally add your personal code number (which can be found on your Notification of Selection Results) as a reference if you can. Please also note that in case you want to apply for a refund the funds needs to be sent back the same source that it originally came from.

When do you need to pay the tuition fees?

On the invoice from Ladok, you will find the deadline for your tuition fee payment.

The Migration Agency will not process your residence permit application until you pay the required tuition-fee. Therefore we strongly recommend that you pay your tuition fee as soon as possible.

Are you waiting to pay the tuition fee until you get a scholarship decision, please read the answer to the next question.

How will waiting to pay the tuition fee until receiving a scholarship decision affect your residence permit application?

If you are able to pay the tuition fee, we strongly encourage you to do this as soon as possible, even if you are awaiting a decision about a Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP).

The reason for this is that less than 5% of applicants are awarded a SISGP. If you wait to pay your fee until after getting a negative decision about the SISGP then you have significantly less time to get a decision about your residence permit application. Furthermore, paying the tuition fee does not impact your chances of getting a SISGP since the scholarship review process at the Swedish Institute is completely seperate from the tuition fee payment process at Dalarna University. We do not get a list of potential scholarship awardees nor do we share information with the Swedish Institute about which students have paid the tuition fee.

Applicants who are awarded a SISGP usually have a quicker processing time with the Migration Agency so if you do get this award then you should proceed to apply for a residence permit as soon as possible using the documentation provided by the Swedish Institute.

If you are awaiting a decision from any other scholarship organization then we recommend that you ensure that you have a decision by mid-May so you can proceed with your residence permit application before the end of May. Keep in mind that this might not be enough time to get a residence permit which is why we strongly recommend you to pay the tuition fee as soon as possible.

Is it possible to pay in installments for the first semester?

No, you must pay the first semester tuition fee in full (minus any scholarship you receive from Dalarna University). If the fee is not paid in full you will not be able to get a residence permit to come to live and study in Sweden.

What if you pay the fee but get denied a residence permit and need a refund?

You can apply for a refund using our refund application. Tuition fee refunds are subject to a 5000 SEK administrative fee. The fee will be deducted from the amount refunded. Refunds are not issued when a student is registered in a programme or course after the start of the semester.

Read more on the tuition fees webpage

What are the average costs of living?

This varies from person to person. Officially we say that you should plan on having 7500 SEK a month available for food, rent, personal expenses (books, mobile phone, internet, clothing, eating out).

Please note that the Migration Agency requires you to show that you have access to around 10 314 SEK a month for the duration of your permit period.

Renting a student accommodation costs around 3000-5500 SEK a month (for one person). Most rooms will cost around 3500-4300 SEK a month.

Student accommodation in Borlänge includes utilities, internet and basic furniture so most students living in Borlänge do not have any additional costs for their accommodation than the rent they pay. Additionally June and July are rent free months in the student accommodation provided by Tunabyggen (Borlänge)
Most student rooms in Falun are not furnished so you will have an extra expense to rent furniture.

Food costs vary from person to person but around 2000 SEK is a reasonable sum to spend each month.

If you expect to have between 800 - 1500 SEK a month in additional expenses (clothing, mobile phone, books/course materials, entertainment and travel expenses) then you should be able to account for most expected expenses as a student.

Rent for one person: 3000 - 5000 SEK
Food for one person: 1800 - 2200 SEK
Data plan and banking fees 150 SEK
Clothing for Swedish weather 400 SEK
Fun stuff (travel, eating out) 350 - 1000 SEK
TOTAL 5700 - 8750

How and when do you apply for a scholarship?

If you will be a new student then you should apply for a scholarship during the application period listed at www.du.se/scholarships

If you are a continuing student and wish to apply for an Academic Excellence Scholarship, your programme manager will share a link with you before the start of your second semester (master's students) and second year (bachelor's students).

When will you be notified if you receive a scholarship from Dalarna University?

New students who apply for a scholarship will be notified by April 15th (autumn semester) and November 1st (spring semester) of the outcome of their application for a scholarship.

Continuing students applying for an academic excellence scholarship are notified in late August for the autumn semester or after the start of the spring semester.

Do you need to inform the SI Scholarship Committee about your conditional admission at Dalarna University?

No. They get a list of admitted students from University Admissions. Being conditionally admitted does not matter. Being admitted to your second choice/third choice/fourth choice doesn’t matter so long as you properly applied for a scholarship for these programmes when you initially applied to the SI scholarship.

Do you need to notify Dalarna University if you get offered a scholarship by Swedish Institute?

No, we are informed about this from the Swedish Institute and will assist you in coming to Dalarna University.

Are there financial institutions in Sweden that can give loans to international students?

There are no banks or other financial institutions in Sweden that will give loans or grants to new international students for studying in Sweden. EU citizens who become residents of Sweden and have lived in Sweden for at least 2 years may be eligible for student grants and loans from CSN, the Swedish Board of Finance.

Can you get a job in Sweden to help pay for your expenses while studying in Sweden?

EU citizens are allowed to live and work in Sweden without a permit.

If you have a residence permit for studying in Sweden then you also have the right to work in Sweden; no additional paperwork is required for you to legally work.

Finding a job can be difficult without knowing Swedish and without having a network of professional contacts. Some of our international students find seasonal work at local ski-resorts in Dalarna and many of our international students remain in Sweden after graduating to look for work.

Please note that a personnummer is not required to work, however a taxpayer ID number is required for a Swedish employer to withhold taxes on your income.

How do I accept my admission to Dalarna University?

If you applied on-time in the first application round then there is no way you can accept your place via the UniversityAdmissions.se portal. The best way to confirm your place is to inform Dalarna University that you intend to study with us and pay the tuition fee (if applicable).

If you have applied on-time in the second application round then it is important that you accept your place via the Universityadmissions.se portal by the stated deadline, otherwise you will lose your place.

If you applied late in either application round then you only need to inform Dalarna University that you intend to study with us and pay the tuition fee (if applicable).

Why am I conditionally admitted?

All students who are required to pay tuition fees are conditionally admitted. This is because your admission is not confirmed until the payment of fees has been made.

It is also possible to be conditionally admitted because you need to submit the final year transcript and diploma from your previous university studies.

Are there any problems with being conditionally admitted?

No. This does not affect your chances of getting a scholarship from Dalarna University or the Swedish Institute. This does not affect your chances of getting a residence permit.

How do I remove the condition from my University Admissions account?

It is actually not possible to do this. The condition can be removed “locally” by Dalarna University but this is not updated in your University Admissions account. The reason for this is that the IT system for processing your application, and the IT system for processing your fee payment at the university are two separate systems. So your status will always be listed as “conditionally admitted” which is fine.

I am placed on reserve to another university, and admitted/conditionally admitted to Dalarna University, what do I do?

This depends upon where you want to study. If you want to study at Dalarna University, then you are admitted and can just follow our instructions to prepare for coming here. If you want to study at the other university then please contact them to find out what your chances are of being admitted at a later date and how their process works for applicants on the reserve list for the specific programme to which you applied.

You do not need to reject your reserve offer in order to stay admitted to Dalarna University.

I need an official admissions decision. Where do I get it?

The Notification of Selection Results (PDF) is the only official admissions decision. You can download this PDF by logging into your University Admissions account.

I am unable to begin my studies this year, can I defer my admission to next year?

If you are required to pay tuition-fees, it is only possible to defer your admission if you pay the first semester tuition fee, otherwise you are welcome to re-apply next year. If you re-apply, you do not need to resend the documents which you have previously sent to University Admissions.
Please see the Dalarna University website for information about Deferment of Studies
