Incoming exchange students: apply to courses

Incoming exchange students apply for courses from this webpage. This is the case if you are a first-time applicant, if you want to add courses to your current application, or if you are applying to your second semester. You apply to your courses one semester at a time.

If your exchange period is longer than one semester, you apply to the courses in the second semester when you are in Sweden.

Application periods

  • Autumn: Students nominated for the autumn semester apply from 15 March to 15 April
  • Spring: Students nominated for the spring semester apply from 15 September to 15 October

Late applications are accepted: this application page is permanently open for applications.

Notification of selection results

If you apply during the application period, you will receive your selection results in your universityadmissions.se account by mid-May (for the autumn semester) or mid-November (for the spring semester). Late applications are processed according to when they arrive.

Visas and residence permits - non-EU/EES citizens

All students with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU) must get a Swedish residence permit before entering Sweden. Visit the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) website or contact a Swedish consulate for details.

If you are a non-EU/EES citizen and need a Swedish residence permit, you must take campus courses worth at least 30 credits per semester. Apply for the Swedish residence permit as soon as you receive your Notification of Selection results. This notification includes a Letter of Acceptance. If you are staying for two semesters, request a two-semester Letter of Acceptance from support@du.se.

You can find information about the requirements for a visa and a residence permit on the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) website. The requirements vary depending on citizenship.

Course selection

You can only be admitted to courses that you are eligible for. Check the entry requirements by clicking the button next to the course name. We always review your transcript(s) of records if you apply to courses with specific entry requirements. Your eligibility depends on which courses you have taken and whether they demonstrate that you meet the entry requirements of the courses you want to take.

There are other ways to demonstrate that you meet the entry requirements of a course: for example, you can upload documentation from your home university certifying that you have sufficient prior knowledge.

Full-time studies equal 30 credits per semester. You may take a maximum of 37.5 credits in any one semester. Filter courses by semester, level, subject, period, location, teaching form, and entry requirements. Exchange students are eligible for all courses that have general entry requirements.
