Description
Regional coherence is of growing importance both on the macro and
on the micro level of a growing European Union.

The objective of ARSAC can be divided into two major points
- The driving factors of regional economic development are to be analysed. This includes the specific role of the three sectors, the potentials of industrial clusters and the thorough analysis of both successful and failed attempts to spur regional growth. In addition, the sustainability of regional development is to be analysed with regard to environmental and social impacts of different development options. The latter includes the question of gender roles in regional development
initiatives. Altogether, the objective is a holistic understanding of the main variables influencing regional development pathways.

- The question of cohesion is largely a question of how to induce economic growth and social progress in regions lagging behind. These regions usually suffer from a low endowment with infrastructure and human capital. Some successful examples showing how the strengths of such regions like low labour costs and valuable cultural landscapes can be exploited to decrease the gap to more prosperous regions have to be understood and turned into recommendations for policy making. This second objective therefore is to show promising pathways how to support problem regions.

By this novel approach, the project should improve our understanding about regional development.
