The course introduces tourism as a multifaceted
phenomenon in modern world. The relation of tourism to the environment, the
economy and society and culture are discussed and related to the sustainability
of destinations. The course introduces basic concepts in tourism studies around
destinations, management, marketing, governance and discusses tourism as a
system to illustrate how destinations are embedded in a dynamic socio-economic and socio-ecological
world. It discusses global and local trends that shape and influence tourism as
a phenomenon and destinations in different parts of the world. The course focuses
on issues of sustainability, destination development, and global trends.
