Description
The project OPTION - acronym for Onset PrevenTion of urinary Incontinence in Orthopaedic Nursing and rehabilitation - focuses two aspects of evidence-based practice (EBP): facilitation of knowledge translation and implementation of evidence on urinary incontinence (UI) for people age 65 and older undergoing hip surgery. Studies have shown an increased risk of developing UI among older people in orthopaedic care and that nursing staff lack knowledge of the UI risk and prevention of UI.
In 2014, we performed a pilot study in two orthopaedic units in Sweden, testing an intervention aiming to support clinical champions in nursing and rehabilitation in facilitating EBP in terms of UI-care in acute care settings. The pilot was based on Realist Evaluation design, focusing "what works, for whom, (and why/why not), in what context?". Further, we evaluated the feasibility of the intervention along with data collection methods and approaches to data analysis. The feasibility study is reported in scientific paper and informs applications for funding for a full trial.
