Description
The overarching aim of this project is to analyze how people use moving images as a cultural resource for the construction of meaningful world views. The specific task is to collect empirical data in order to undertake a critical investigation about how
consumption of fiction film is interconnected to spectator´s creation of personal belief systems.

Within the project I will distribute a questionnaire among 400 students in education, nursing and social care as well as media, to find spectators watching films with a certain degree of engagement. Eight focus groups with 5-6 individuals will be interviewed, around 45 persons in all, combined with an in-depth individual interview from each group. All interviews will be taped and transcribed.

Main research questions: How is engagement in fiction film affecting spectator?s meaning-making processes regarding more profound and long-lasting ideas about themselves and society? What kind of thoughts and feelings are articulated when talking about favorite films in group and individually? How can empirical data be used to illustrate as well as theoretically develop theories about the reflexive self?

The project´s importance lies in its potential to develop a more sophisticated understanding of the complex interplay between moving images and non-visual meaning-making processes and how the audience uses fiction in every-day life related to self reflexivity as well as the quest of being part of a moral community.
