Description
Social exclusion has negative consequences for physical and mental health. Older people are particularly dependent on networks and contacts in their local community. There is little research on social exclusion amongst older people that compares communities with different characteristics and hardly any research that focus on the unique conditions in former industrial areas.

The aim of this project is to
1. determine how and to what extent older people in former industrial communities are socially excluded,
2. identify what factors lead to social exclusion of older people in such communities, and
3. find out what actions can be taken to prevent or reduce social exclusion.

The study has three phases. Initially, focus groups will be conducted with older people regarding their experiences and opinions on social exclusion. In the second phase of the project, a survey will be carried out by means of face-to-face interviews of 1200 older people, of which half live in former industrial areas and half live in rural areas. In the third phase, workhops will be held with experts from the field (e.g. health and social care, voluntary organisations, transport organisations, the police). Following a presentation of the main results of the focus groups and survey, the discussion will focus how to tackle social exclusion.

The study is undertaken in Barnsley, England, in collaboration with Age Concern Barnsley and Sheffield Hallam University.
