Description
Visual Studies can be defined as the study of visual phenomena in society or as the use of visual data in order to understand society. Under the former heading sociological researchers have, for instance, studied vernacular photography, photographers at work, photographic technology and the use of photographs in retaining social memory. Under the latter heading, images have been used to study the social construction of taste, to gain access to children’s worlds and to document various subcultures and their presentations of themselves. In addition to these main strands, the role of visualisation in scientific and other cognitive processes have attracted the interest of researchers, as well as increasing visual activity in the conduct of everyday life that is facilitated by the falling costs of digital cameras, camera mobiles and easy image exchange over the internet. This project will explore and analyse the sociological tradition that addresses such issues, visual sociology.
