The project is a co-operation between Dalarna University, SSAB Tunnplåt AB and Uddeholm Tooling AB. The project is financed by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.
The main objectives of the proposed project are to:
i) expand and accelerate the understanding of the friction and wear mechanisms behind the phenomena resulting in galling and how these can be controlled in different metal forming operations used for forming advanced high strength steel.
ii) strengthen the research cooperation between Dalarna University College and the steel industry.
Condensed work plan:
i) The friction and wear characteristics of a number of tool steel grades, covering both standard grades and the latest nitrogen alloyed PM steels recently launched by Uddeholm Tooling AB, PVD coatings and lubricants will be evaluated during metal forming conditions using different types of advanced high strength steel as work material.
ii) Surface characterisation of the tribo surfaces, using advanced microscopy and surface analysis techniques such as SEM, AES, ToF-SIMS, etc, will be performed in order to obtain a deeper knowledge about the prevailing friction and wear mechanisms.
The expected results include;
i) increased knowledge concerning the mechanisms controlling the initiation of galling in metal forming leading to the development of the next generation of metal forming tools, PVD coatings and lubricants or combinations of these.
ii) development of models focusing on the conditions at which advanced high strength steels can be formed without major problems.
iii) stronger research environments at Dalarna university and the participating companies.
