In this project we analyse the causes and consequences of enlargement of labour market regions. Aspects of individual possibilities to commute with special focus on gender are studied. Individual reach is related to aggregate patterns of commuting and the size of labour market regions.
The project will provide new knowledge concerning individual and place specific causes of geographical mobility and/or immobility in the labour market. This qualitative knowledge about individual´s behaviour will be related to the aggregated consequences for economic growth and to dynamic geographical patterns of mobility in different regions and for different groups of individuals.
Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used in this research project. The different methods are combined and results from the quantitative analysis of statistics and the visualisation of processes by the use of GIS (geographical Information systems) will be merged with a qualitative analysis of interviews.
