The aim of the project is to analyse the institutional structure as well as the local and regional effects of two contemporary production systems related to mines: mining and heritage tourism. We will investigate how mineral production and the production of tourism affect social relations such as: gender relations, place specific norms and values, economic activity, and differences in industrial dynamics within a local and regional context.
The Falun Copper Mine is both a historic site and a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the other hand, the mine in Kiruna is expanding the industrial production of iron ore and the company LKAB is planning to relocate the Kiruna town centre as a consequence. The cases of Falun and Kiruna give us the possibility to examine the differences and the local and regional consequences of the two systems of mine-related production. This knowledge is essential for managing situations where the two systems of production exist alongside each other and sometimes are in conflict with specific local settings. How can mining and heritage tourism co-exist and what are the consequences of the different choices concerning the mine-related production processes? Interviews, analysis of document and media reports will be complemented with descriptive statistics on economic activities in the two regions.
