Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • write clear, concise and accurate business texts in English
  • proof-read and edit their own texts in order to identify and avoid common grammatical mistakes in the English language
  • use an appropriate register depending on the style and context of the document/written text
  •  illustrate and describe business trends in the form of graphs and diagrams
  • prepare him or herself for a job interview by writing a CV with accompanying documentation and by discussing interview techniques.
  • make use of an expanded glossary in the areas of tourism and social science in writing.

Course Content

This module highlights the basic structure of the English language, including fundamental grammar points. The student’s writing skills are developed via a variety of exercises such as brief reports and letter writing. Attention will be given to language style and to practical cultural aspects. The student will continue to develop his or her oral communicative skills. The student’s vocabulary will be further developed via worksheets and exercises, and by reading a second novel/textbook in English, and writing an accompanying book report.

Assessment

The course is examined through continuous assessment of seminar participation, written assignments and written exam.

Forms of Study

Teaching takes the form of obligatory seminars, and excercises with a focus on written production. All teaching is conducted in English.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

Prerequisites

  • General entrance requirements and English B at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge.
  • No knowledge of Swedish is required.

Other Information

The course cannot be part of the 90 ECTS-credit block of English in the BA degree in English at Högskolan Dalarna.
