Russian III: Russian Literature from 1800 to 1917

On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • describe the development of Russian literature during the 19th century and up to 1917
  • analyse and interpret literary works from this period
  • describe the ideological and literary debate during this time period and discuss how it is reflected in literary works
  • formualte, independently, an issue for a short scientific essay
  • use theories and methods in a delimited scientific study
  • critically review another essay.

The course provides an introduction to important literary works from the 19th century up to 1917. The course also highlights literary and cultural processes in Russia during this period. Special attention is paid to authors‘ narrative styles and artistic devices, and the major themes in Russian literature. The works are read in translation. The course provides students with the opportunity to practice how to critically read scientific texts and how to understand the relationship between society and literature, as well as how to compose a short scientific essay and take part in public discussion and examination (opposition).
