Course GBY2NF

Structural Engineering

5 Credits
First Cycle

Starts week 36, 2024

The student must acquire knowledge of loads and forces in building structures as well as the basics of strength theory. Knowledge must also be acquired about how building structures of wood, steel, concrete and masonry work.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:
  • determine the size of the loads on different building structures
  • perform load counts for simple cases with dead weight, payload, snow and wind load
  • explain power transmission in beams and columns
  • know the operation of frames and arches
  • calculate forces and moments in simpler constructions
  • calculate tensile and compressive stresses for beams affected by simpler loads
  • know the concept of buckling and have orientation of calculation methods for buckling
  • explain the loadbearing capacity and mode of operation of loadbearing structures made of wood, steel, concrete and masonry
  • know how different soil conditions affect the choice of foundation method
