Academic Writing and Speaking in English Linguistics
Starts week 3, 2021
On completion of the course, the students shall be able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with two selected main types of academic writing in linguistics, the Master thesis and the research article
- demonstrate knowledge of genre analysis with respect to the communicative functions and the organisation of key elements of research writing in English linguistics, including the abstract, the introduction, the literature review, the description of methodology, the results, and the conclusion
- analyze the structure and rhetorical features of a spoken conference presentation, followed by planning and giving their own spoken presentation
- apply the conventions of the discipline with respect to referring to and integrating other sources into their own text
- critically evaluate the scholarly work of others by pointing out strengths as well as weaknesses in the form of constructive response
- communicate ideas, develop arguments and discuss academic work, showing a high level of communicative competence in both written and spoken academic English.

- 90 credits in English including 30 credits at First cycle level 2, including a course in English linguistics (at First cycle level 2) or equivalent knowledge. Furthermore proficiency in English documented by one of the following international proficiency test is required: a TOEFL test including TWE with a minimum of 630 (paper) 267 (computer) or 109 (Internet); a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency with an A or B grade; an IELTS test with a minimum of 7.5 (and no module under 7), or the equivalent knowledge

Higher rate of web-based communication where our learning platform (Learn) is a natural element of the course, as are web-based meetings using sound and image. Lectures can be broadcast live or can alternatively be made available afterwards online. Use more advanced programmes – for example, simulation programmes.
