On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
· apply core corpus linguistic methods for linguistic research
· show a raised awareness of how language is used lexically, semantically, grammatically, and pragmatically in authentic communicative contexts
· show a deeper understanding of variation in the English language, based on variables such as register and spoken/written modes
· critically evaluate prescriptive language norms from the perspective of usage data
· account for the main concepts and fundamental ideas in corpus linguistics
· design and carry out a small-scale research project based on corpus linguistics methods and present it orally and in writing.
The course includes mandatory online meetings, which take place in a virtual classroom at specific times. No physical meetings on campus are included.
Mandatory online meetings will be held according to the schedule.
Surf on the Internet, read and send emails, use a word-processing programme (e.g. Word). Plug in peripherals to your computer, install programmes and adapt installations for your computer.
Access to a computer (Not a mini pc, tablet or similar) that is not older than two years (or equivalent) and broadband connection, at least 2 Mbit/s (not mobile broadband, because mobile broadband can vary considerably in speed).
Higher rate of web-based communication where our learning platform (Learn/Canvas) is a natural element of the course, as are web-based meetings using sound and image. Lectures can be broadcast live or can alternatively be made available afterwards online. Use more advanced programmes – for example, simulation programmes.
Literature lists are published at the latest one month ahead of the course start date.
