Gynecological and Postpartum Care, Clinical Practice

Starts week 3, 2024

The overall objective of the course is that the student should be able to apply, extend and integrate their theoretical and clinical knowledge in sexual, reproductive and perinatal health based on the midwifery profession and research area focsing on gynecological care and postpartum care.

After completing the course the student should be able on an extended level to
  • critically reflect on concepts, theories and perspectives to promote good health care in gynecological- and postpartum care, with a focus on women and the family perspective,
  • independently care for women and healthy babies postpartum and identify deviations from the normal progression,
  • promote the mother-child connection and provide support, protection and advice on breastfeeding,
  • assess and evaluate breastfeeding complications and need for alternative feeding methods,
  • conduct investigation and treatment of premature infants,
  • use of medical technology within the midwife‘s responsibility and work area in a safe manner,
  • identify health problems and illnesses in gynecological health care and conduct treatment in outpatient and inpatient gynecological care,
  • actively initiate and create good quality care with a high hygienic standards,
  • participate in abortion activities and show independence in the care of women havng an abortion in inpatient care as well as outpatient gynecological care,
  • apply adequate documentation, patient record management and reporting according to current regulations,
  • apply a professional approach in communication with patients and colleagues and show empathy in the assessment and application of knowledge in the light of the situaion for the patient and closely related person,
  • discuss and reflect on personal professional development as a midwife.
