The course addresses the integration of climate and energy considerations in the planning of urban environments. The course also addresses the built environment’s impact on infrastructure systems and its energy use, as well as its effect on climate change. An existing or planned neighborhood is studied to make recommendations and alternative proposals responding to current energy and climate challenges.

Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • collect, compile and analyse information from multiple sources to describe the energy consumption of urban environments
  • account for climate change, and its relevance for urban planning and evaluate strategies to integrate climate considerations into sustainable urban development
  • explain the basics of different urban infrastructure systems and analyse their climate and energy impact
  • analyse and critically evaluate existing or planned neighborhoods from the perspective of climate impact and energy use
  • design and justify proposals and recommendations for how neighborhoods could be developed or redeveloped to become more sustainable.
