1. Objectives of the Educational Programme

1.1 Objectives, as Specified in the Higher Education Act (1992:1434), Chapter 1, 8 §:

Undergraduate education shall, in addition to knowledge and skills, provide the students with a capability of independent and critical judgment, an ability to independently solve problems and an ability to follow the development of knowledge, all within the field covered by the education. The education should also develop the students’ ability to exchange information at a scientific level.

1.2 Degree Objectives, as Specified in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Appendix 2:

Knowledge and understanding
For the degree of Bachelor the student must
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main subject area, including both knowledge of the scholarly basis of the area, knowledge of methods used in the area, deeper knowledge of some part of the area as well an awareness of current research issues.

Skills and ability
For the degree of Bachelor the student must
-demonstrate an ability to find, collect, evaluate and critically interpret relevant information in an issue and critically discuss phenomena, issues and situation,
- demonstrate an ability to independently identify, formulate and solve problems and to carry out tasks within the given timeframe,
- demonstrate an ability to, both orally and in writing, present and discuss information, problems and solutions in dialogue with different groups, and
- demonstrate the skill required to work independently in the field of the programme.

Critical skills and approach
For the degree of Bachelor the student must
- within the main subject area demonstrate an ability to make judgements with reference to relevant scientific, social and ethical criteria
- demonstrate insight into the role of knowledge in society and the responsibility of individuals in how it is used, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify his or her own need of further knowledge and competence.

1.3 Objectives of the Programme

At the end of the programme, the student will be able to

  • use broad knowledge about the English language and the literature, culture and society of the English-speaking world including

o Good awareness of the grammar, linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, history and geographical and social variation in the English language
o Familiarity with the main features of the history of literature and ideas and contemporary society in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as knowledge of the development of English-language literary criticism and literary theory during the latter half of the twentieth century;

  • Use detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of either English linguistics or English literature and/or culture:
  • Apply theoretical knowledge in analysis and interpretation of a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts as well as other means of cultural expression such as film, television and the Internet;
  • Demonstrate ability and competence in formulating and solving linguistic, literary, or cultural problems where many complex factors interact;
  • Make educated evaluations of various kinds of texts and linguistic utterances on the basis of accepted practice in linguistics or literature studies, and argue for an analysis or interpretation where both social and ethical issues are considered;
  • Demonstrate a high level of linguistic proficiency and ability to communicate subject knowledge, ideas, linguistic and literary problems and solutions, both to specialists and to those with no previous knowledge of the field in the form of substantial oral and written presentations using a variety of techniques for qualitative and quantitative information;
  • Evaluate his or her own learning and that of others and identify knowledge needs for further learning;
  • Demonstrate experience of working cooperation in a complex environment;
  • Critically analyze and reflect upon one’s own as well as others’ social and cultural norms and conditions in order to create understanding for others;
  • Demonstrate a high degree of independence as well as the study skills necessary to continue studying at advanced level.

2. Main Structure of the Programme

The first two years of the programme are dedicated to a wide range of courses in English language, linguistics and English-language literature and culture. All courses belong to the subject English. In the third year students specialise in English linguistics, English literature or English-speaking culture by choosing from a number of optional courses which are offered each semester at G2-level. During this final year it is possible for students, in consultation with the programme coordinator, to study up to 15 HEC credits in an adjacent area at Högskolan Dalarna if this is useful for the planned degree thesis, for example social anthropology, history or another language to further develop the specialisation.

Semester 5
Four 7.5 HEC courses in English or an adjacent area of language, literature or culture relevant for the degree thesis chosen from the remaining courses at G2-level taught in English at Högskolan Dalarna.

Semester 6
Two 7.5 HEC courses in English or an adjacent area of language, literature or culture relevant for the degree thesis chosen from the remaining courses at G2-level taught in English at Högskolan Dalarna.

4. Degree Awarded

Students who fulfil the objectives of the programme and pass all the courses will – upon application – be awarded a Filosofie kandidatexamen med huvudområdet engelska (Degree of Bachelor of Arts with a Major in English)

5. Required Entry Qualifications

  • General entrance requirements and English B at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required.

6. Other Information

The name of the programme can be written in the degree certificate, given that at least 165 HEC have been achieved according to the syllabus.
