Assessing the Impact of Reused Building Framework Materials on GHG Emissions of Buildings and Total Energy Demand

The reuse of building materials is crucial for conserving resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the framework of circular economy. Despite increased awareness, there are few practical examples of reuse of structural building components.

Description

In this project, we are examining four examples in Sweden where structural elements or large building shell components are being reused. In two projects existing building frameworks are being reused on-site, in the other two, building elements are being relocated from old structures. The main focus is on evaluating the following aspects concerning buildings with reused structural components: the impact on greenhouse gas emissions through the life cycle, compliance with energy requirements, and practical and legal challenges.

Stakeholders from the entire construction chain are participating in a workshop series. The goal is to gather insights and propose improvements to Boverket's guidelines for the safe reuse of structural componets.
