Medical violence
We all encounter healthcare – as patients, relatives or professionals. The mission of healthcare is to protect life and alleviate suffering, including suffering that has arisen due to violence. But what happens when healthcare itself becomes a place where violence is exercised?
In this seminar, we introduce the concept of "medical violence" that challenges our ideas about what violence is and where it can occur. Together, we explore how violence can manifest itself in medical contexts, and whether it is possible to distinguish this from other forms of violence. We also discuss how the concept can be useful in other professional and non-medical contexts.
