Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Explain the role of the map as a tool for description and analysis of tourism-related phenomena
  • Describe the basic concepts of geodesy, projections and geographic coordinate systems
  • Show in-depth understanding of the functionality and application of GIS software

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out the necessary processing and calculations of statistics in the available databases and furthermore visualize them into thematic maps using GIS software
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and the ability to apply the function of technical equipment and software through practical labs

Judgement and approach

  • Critically assess cartographically presented information and evaluate the merits and shortcomings of the technical equipment and the functions of software .

Course Content

The course provides an introduction to cartography, chorology and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The course covers the general history of cartography, geodetic concepts, reference systems, projections and the emergence of computer-based maps. In the laboratory work, which forms the core of the course, students are trained in the construction of thematic maps in computers and are taught the skills to analyse the contents of maps. An important part of the training to produce maps includes developing a basis by processing the data and performing calculations in spatial statistics.

Assessment

This course is assessed through assignments (4.5 credits) and a written examination (3 credits).

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

For a higher grade than C, a grade higher than C in the examinations and assignments is required.

Prerequisites

  • General entrance requirements.

Other Information

The number of examinations is limited to five (5).
In the case of late submission of work, marks higher then pass (C) cannot be achieved.
This course cannot be included in a degree with TR1017, KG1014 or KG1020.
