Learning Outcomes

The course’s goal is that students develop a basic knowledge of the Spanish language‘s grammatical structures and vocabulary and the ability to communicate in written Spanish.

Upon completing the course students will be able to:

  • read and write different types of texts such as newspaper articles, news and factual texts
  • describe the basics of grammar
  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammatical and lexical features in various Spanish-speaking areas, and use a variety of Spanish vocabulary in their own texts
  • argue for or against a particular position in writing and through writing their own text production show good application of Spanish basic grammar
  • explain grammatical aspects of the Spanish language and demonstrate an understanding of the structural differences between the Spanish and Swedish languages
  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of presentation technique and apply it in written expression.

Course Content

The course begins with general grammar where morphology and syntax are studied. After that, there is a systematic review of the basic features of Spanish grammar with an emphasis on the proper usage of the language. The course includes practical exercises in the form of both less and more structured writing assignments, such as translations and summaries, plus reports and written discussions in a forum. Geographical variation and different registers of written Spanish are addressed using various materials. A particular focus is placed on the contrastive analysis of Spanish and Swedish structural differences. Different types of texts, including news, opinion articles and digital publications, are studied with a focus on language form and expression. The course also deals with grammar and its variation from a dialectal perspective.

Assessment

The students will be evaluated based on written assignments, active participation in seminars and chat discussions and one final written net-based exam.

Forms of Study

The teaching is conducted both in the form of lectures and compulsory seminars in which students are expected to participate actively. Tuition is in Spanish and Swedish.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

Module 2: Spanish written proficiency and grammar - 5,5 hp

Prerequisites

  • General entrance requirements and Spanish step 3 and English A at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge.
