Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • present ancient Italian literary history up to the seventeenth century, including representative writers in this period
  • demonstrate the ability to understand and assimilate ancient Italian texts
  • demonstrate a good knowledge of literary terminology and literary concepts
  • independently reflect on ancient texts and related historical and cultural aspects
  • present a clear argument orally and in writing in a stylistically effective and appropriate manner.

Course Content

The course includes a historical summary of the literature from the 1200s until the 1600s, and an overview of Italian literary and cultural expressions through the reading of selected ancient texts representative to the context.

Assessment

The course is examined through continuous assessment of seminar activity, assignments and a final written exam.

Forms of Study

The course, which is web-based and completely distance-based, is conducted in Italian, and is given through lectures and seminars.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To get the grade of VG on the whole course, VG is required on module 2.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Active participation in seminars and assignments - 3 cr
Module 2: Final written exam - 4.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • Italian Written Proficiency II 7,5cr; Italian 18th, 19th and 20th Century Literature, 7,5cr and History of the Italian Language, 7,5cr or equivalent knowledge.
