Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • use the most common phonetic terms to describe and analyze Italian pronunciation
  • explain and reflect upon the main features of Italian pronunciation from a contrastive perspective
  • understand standard spoken Italian in authentic situations
  • discuss and express opinions about different subjects from an intercultural perspective by using everyday Italian and demonstrating adequate pronunciation
  • plan and give a brief oral presentation in Italian.

Course Content

The course contains a review of Italian pronunciation and main phonetical features with application in practical pronunciation exercises. The course also enables students to gain a basic knowledge so that they can develop their communicative skills in standard spoken Italian. Current topics in Italian culture, debate and everyday life are discussed from an intercultural perspective. Students are taught to plan and conduct oral presentations.

Assessment

Continuous assessment is implemented through assessment of students’ active participation in seminars, recordings of their spoken Italian, and an oral and written exam.

Forms of Study

Obligatory seminars in which students participate actively and in collaboration with their peers. In addition, students shall independently watch short films and television shows, as well as listen to audio material. The language of instruction is Italian.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG in the whole course, students must achieve VG in all modules.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Phonetics; oral and written examination - 2.5 cr
Module 2: Active participation in seminars and oral presentations - 4 cr
Module 3: Oral recordings - 1 cr

Prerequisites

  • General entrance requirements and Italian B/Italian 3 at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish and English is required.

Other Information

Teaching is web-based through the use of a learning platform and digital tools. Students require a computer with sound card and network connection, a headset with microphone and headphones, as well as a webcam.
