Learning Outcomes

The general objectives of the course are to provide the students with opportunities to develop their capacity to perform studies on a scientific basis within the area of industrial engineering and management and to report and communicate their analysis and conclusions in an objective, relevant and informed manner.
After completing the course, the course participants will be able to:

  • Plan and conduct an investigation in an independent manner,
  • Formulate and define problems within the area of industrial management and engineering on the basis of different perspectives and frames of reference,
  • Seek relevant information,
  • Analyze data and interpret findings,
  • Follow standard practices in terms of written reports and documentation of an investigation,
  • Critically examine texts and investigations.

Course Content

The thesis work is largely based on the course participants’ own initiative and independent work. At supervision meetings and seminars, different ways to define and describe the problems, theoretical points, methodology and different data collection techniques are discussed.
During the course, students are trained to think in models, to make conscious and explicit simplifications, to gather relevant information and to analyse data. They are trained to make choices and trade-offs transparent and explicit, and to present and comment on their own and others’ material in a careful and thoughtful way. The course also includes individual studies to deepen the students’ knowledge in areas relevant to their work.

Assessment

The course is graded through an assessment of the final report, the efforts during the seminars in the form of opposition activities, presentations and active participation in discussions and the degree of autonomy.

Forms of Study

The thesis will normally be conducted in pairs and in close dialogue with the supervisor. Tutoring takes place within a group of several thesis projects, but also individually.
Instruction consists of tutorials and seminars. Towards the end of the course, seminars with opposition will take place.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

The marking is individual.
