Learning Outcomes

The overall objective of the course is to introduce students to architectural and urban design, where the emphasis is on equipping students with analytical tools needed to assess urban places and design proposals and to provide students with skills necessary for delivering professional designs and presentations. After completing the course, students shall be able to:

  • Develop professional materials for verbal and visual presentations using different media.
  • Analyse existing urban places and design proposals with the support of the design concepts and methodologies that have been introduced.
  • Develop their own urban/architectural design proposals/interventions utilising methodologies covered by the course.

Course Content

The course is an introduction to urban and architectural design. It will establish an understanding of concepts and organising ideas needed to think coherently and critically about buildings, urban spaces and forms The course also contributes to equip students with the skills necessary for delivering design proposals in a professional manner. The course covers the main concepts of urban design taken from the 20th and 21st centuries, including history studies, space-morphology studies and picturesque studies. The course also introduces different methods for analysis and techniques for presentation and visualisation.

The final grade is a weighted grade based on the grades for the different parts of the course.
