Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- explain and compare historical and current discussions about children in new religious environments
- apply Theoretical Concepts and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in discussions about children‘s religious freedom in new religious environments
- reflect on how new religious environments affect the conditions in which children and young adults‘ grow up and the formation of their identity.
Course Content
In this course, new religious environments and organisations that are referred to as sects, new religious movements or spiritual enivronments are studied. The course focuses on the conditions in which children and young adults‘ grow up, their formation of identity, and their rights regarding freedom of religion based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Children and Young Adults in Closed Religious Communities - 7.5 Credits | U–VG

Other Information
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
