Learning Outcomes

 

Modules

1.
Grammar and Written Language Proficiency I, 10 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • use basic grammatical terminology to describe Portuguese language use
  • identify grammatical structures when reading simple texts and reviewing their own texts and the texts of other students
  • demonstrate knowledge of various basic grammatical concepts and various grammatical forms in their own use of Portuguese
  • describe basic differences and similarities between Swedish and English as well as between varieties of Portuguese.

2.
Phonetics and Oral Language Proficiency I, 5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • use basic phonetic terminology to orally describe the Portuguese sound system and varieties of Portuguese as well as the differences and similarities between other languages
  • explain different aspects of the Portuguese sound system, such as stress and intonation patterns, and pronounce words and sentences in Portuguese in a way that promotes understanding
  • give short oral presentations in Portuguese.

3.
Portuguese-Speaking Cultures, 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • identify and problematise, both orally and in writing, various cultural aspects and social phenomena in Portuguese-speaking regions
  • reflect on the geographical spread of the Portuguese language in the world and the way in which this has led to various linguistic and cultural encounters in different historical and socio-cultural contexts
  • seek, compile and critically interpret information in Portuguese with transcultural perspectives.

Course Content

The course consists of three modules.

Modules

1.
Grammar and Written Language Proficiency I, 10 Credits

This module includes studies of Portuguese grammar with practical exercises such as the analysis of grammatical structures. Throughout the module, students build on their knowledge of Portuguese grammar while working to improve their ability to write and analyse texts.

2.
Phonetics and Oral Language Proficiency I, 5 Credits

This module includes basic studies in general and Portuguese phonetics and pronunciation. Differences between language varieties are addressed by, for example, analysing films in Portuguese from different parts of the world. In the module, students work on their oral language proficiency and listening comprehension.

3.
Portuguese-Speaking Cultures, 7.5 Credits

This module uses film and a selection of texts to illustrate and highlight various aspects of culture and society in multilingual and multicultural regions where the Portuguese language has official status. The material is studied and analysed with a focus on cultural encounters and the construction of identities, particularly in contemporary historical and socio-cultural contexts. Socio-cultural aspects are discussed to give students a good foundation tha will help them understand Portuguese-speaking environments from a transcultural perspective.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

For a final course grade of VG, students must achieve VG for at least 18 credits. 

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Grammar Test - 3.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Written Assignments - 4 Credits | U–VG
  • Review of Other Students‘ Texts - 2.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Pronunciation Test - 2 Credits | U–VG
  • Oral Presentations - 3 Credits | U–VG
  • Portuguese-Speaking Cultures - 7.5 Credits | U–VG

Entry Requirements

  • Portuguese: Basic Course II 15 credits

Other Information

The language of instruction is Portuguese, and English serves a a support language.

This course overlaps the courses Portuguese: Grammar and Written Language Proficiency I, 10 credits, Portuguese: Phonetics and Oral Language Proficiency I, 5 credits and Portuguese: Portuguese-Speaking Cultures, 7.5 credits.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
