Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify, use and assess communication styles and techniques used in professional settings
  • discuss how different methods of communication are context-sensitive and have different effects on, for example, inclusion
  • use concepts and theoretical perspectives to identify relevant areas for improved communication in a workplace setting
  • critically reflect on the role different approaches to communication have at the workplace based on relevant theories.

Course Content

The course has three parts: Introduction, Internship and Theoretical Perspectives.
In the introduction part, students engage in small-scale, hands-on projects examining communicative methods in intercultural workplace settings. Students can tailor the content to their specific areas of interest.
The internship part consists of an internship at a workplace where observation and assessment of communication practices are carried out in light of theoretical perspectives. Techniques for enhanced intercultural communication and inclusion at the workplace are explored. The focus is on identifying relevant areas of intervention at the workplace based on communication theories. Students reflect on their own communication in connection to the workplace.
In the theoretical perspectives part, practice is both deepened and integrated with theories in the field of intercultural communication and communication in the workplace. This part is completed in dialogue with the workplace and focuses on the feasibility of implementing the interventions/actions to strengthen communication in the specific workplace.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

For a final course grade of VG, students must achieve a VG for 7.5 credits, including the modules Theoretical Perspectives - Written Assignment and Theoretical Perspectives - Oral Assignment.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Introduction - Assignment 1 - 2.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Introduction - Assignment 2 - 2.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Internship - Plan and Logbook - 5 Credits | U–G
  • Theoretical Perspectives - Written Assignment - 2.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Theoretical Perspectives - Oral Assignment - 2.5 Credits | U–VG

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
