Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe basic terms and methods in the field of quality, and the importance of quality for an organisation
- analyse production results and develop plans that address quality improvement
- analyse quality problems of physical products and develop plans that address quality improvement
- describe the design of quality management systems and the way they are employed
- examine the value of ethical judgements in a systematic manner
Course Content
The course starts with a study of what quality can mean for the individual and what can affect our experiences when it comes to quality. After a review of how quality has been perceived historically, contemporary definitions of the concept of quality are examined as is the way in which quality affects customers and stakeholders. The course deals with the methods that address the direction and development of production so that an optimal level of quality is attained. For example, methods are introduced such as test planning, statistical process management and capability studies. To conclude, the ethical choices of organisations are examined and the way these can affect the reputation of an organisation in terms of quality.
