Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the students shall be able to:

  • use Italian, orally and in writing, to discuss the content of a selection of literary texts in the detective genre
  • reflect on literary texts in the detective genre and relate them and their authors to each other on the basis of content and language
  • identify and describe typical stylistic and literary features of the detective genre using elementary literary concepts
  • explain how the Italian detective genre has developed during the 1900‘s and 2000‘s.

Course Content

The course includes a study of selected works of some Italian detective writers from the 1900 and 2000s. Based on the literary texts, the course provides an overview of the emergence and development of the detective genre in Italy and an introduction to the typical literary and stylistic features of the genre.

Assessment

Continuous examination through assessment of the students‘ active participation in seminars and written reports.

Forms of Study

Teaching is in the form of lectures and obligatory seminars where students are expected to participate actively and interact with their fellow students. The language of instruction is Italian.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To receive the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required on both modules.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Active participation in seminars - 3 cr
Module 2: Written assignments - 4.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • General entry requirements and Italian 3 or the course Italian: Beginners Course II, 15 credits. No knowledge of Swedish is required

Other Information

Teaching and learning take place online with the support of an on-line platform and digital tools. It is assumed that students have access to a computer with a sound card and internet connection. A headset, microphone and web-cam are required as well.
