Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • collect relevant linguistic or literary material in French for a scientific study and demonstrate theoretical knowledge of some chosen relevant and up-to-date research questions in the same area of specialisation
  • demonstrate independence and the ability to solve problems, as well as a reflective approach
  • write a theoretical work in acceptable French where students use methods appropriate for their work and can search for, and critically interpret, relevant sources, as well as analyse and summarise their results
  • take into account and use different opinions from their supervisor and other students in order to work on their own texts
  • analyse, discuss and critically evaluate another thesis in French in a constructive way at the oral examination
  • demonstrate the correct reference techniques, accurate quotes and accurate and relevant bibliography
  • defend their own degree thesis, in French, at the oral examination.

Course Content

The degree thesis has either a linguistic or a literary focus. The focus and the subject are chosen in consultation with the supervisor. The course starts with a short section on methodology which is tailored to the focus the students have chosen. During the course, students should write a degree thesis in acceptable French of 20-25 pages (7500-9000 words), where knowledge of methodology is required as well as meeting demands on scientific formalia, in order to pass. The degree thesis should be defended at an examining seminar.

Assessment

The course is examined through the writing of a scientific degree thesis, the defense of the student’s own thesis and examination of another student’s work.

Forms of Study
