Learning Outcomes

The overall objective of the course is to prepare students for oral presentations in academic and professional contexts by developing their awareness of genre.
On completion of the course, students will, in English, be able to:

  • prepare and deliver well-structured formal and informal oral presentations
  • analyse the needs of the target audience, and adapt the form and content of their presentation accordingly
  • communicate orally with experts and non-experts in academic and professional contexts
  • use visual resources to support oral presentations
  • demonstrate a practical awareness of common challenges relating to oral presentations.

Course Content

The course introduces a genre approach to oral presentations in academic and professional (work-related) contexts. The course offers descriptions of the key linguistic and rhetorical characteristics of academic and professional presentations in English. Students view two presentation types on similar topics designed for different audiences: one for an expert audience and one for a non-expert audience. They conduct short analyses of the rhetorical and linguistic features of the two and compare them. The course also deals with visual resources used to support oral presentations. Students analyse and design visual materials, and give an oral presentation while using visual resources. The course also focuses on aspects of clear communication to prepare students to deliver clear, organised and effective presentations.
