Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe the characteristics of solar radiation before and after it passes through the atmosphere, and also describe basic geometry and common terminology for the movement of the sun,
  • describe the structure and function of PV components, batteries and PV systems,
  • independently dimension PV systems manually and using simulation tools,
  • give examples of environmental aspects of PV systems and aspects related to the market economy.

Course Content

The course begins with an introduction to the physics and potential of solar radiation, its distribution over time, and its dependence on geography. This is followed by an overview of photovoltaics (PV) technology and the manufacturing of PV cells . The structure and function of the most important components in a PV system, such as PV modules, inverters, and batteries, are discussed. In the next step, system concepts for grid-connected and stand-alone installations are addressed along with the manual and computational dimensioning of these systems . The course concludes with instruction on the mounting and installation of PV systems and on methods for economic and environmental assessments of PV systems.
