Learning Outcomes

The overall purpose of this course is to prepare the student for the task of writing a linguistic or literary thesis at the advanced level.
After completing the course, students shall, in French, be able to:

  • demonstrate a good knowledge of different types of argumentation that arise in different texts such as scientific articles, reviews and dissertations
  • describe the structures of scientific texts
  • practically apply the above knowledge in the form of various independently conducted analysis assignments in close to perfect French
  • analyze and discuss, in the form of constructive feedback, the scholarly work of others by pointing out its strengths as well as weaknesses.

Course Content

The course includes advanced studies in writtne French and argumentation, which includes critical reading of a selection of argumentative texts in French. Throughout the course, the student will complete a number of analytical and writing tasks as well as a limited research report in the form of a scientific review.

Assessment

The course is assessed through written assignments, continuous assessment of participation in seminar discussions and a limited research assignment presented in the form of a scientific review.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade VG for the whole course, VG is required in both modules.

Module 2: Production - 3 cr

Prerequisites

  • 90 credits in French, of which 30 credits on First cycle level 2, including one of the courses French Grammar and Linguistics, 7.5 credits or French: French Corpus Linguistics, 7.5 credits on First cycle level 2, or equivalent knowledge
