Learning Outcomes

Module 1 (Method, 2.5 cr)
Module 1 of the course has two components: a linguistic and a literary. The students him-/herself chooses his/her specialization.
The student who chooses the linguistic component is expected to, in French, be able to:

  • describe the basic types of methods used in linguistic research
  • apply basic qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze linguistic data
  • reflect on these methods.

The student who chooses the literary component is expected to be able to:

  • explain some of the basic methods used within literary research
  • apply the relevant critical methods for different texts
  • reflect on theses methods

Module 2 (Academic writing, 5 cr)
After completing the module, students shall, in French, be able to:

  • demonstrate familiarity with the structure of academic texts, which includes the formulation of basic issues, critical review of previous research, choice of method and theory connection, as well as the formation of their own scientifically based arguments
  • produce their own short academic text in close to perfect French
  • analyze and discuss the scholarly work of others by pointing out strengths as well as shortcomings in the form of constructive feedback.

Course Content

Students learn about different linguistic or literary methods. These methods are applied and critically evaluated. In the second part of the course, students study science writing in French. They also produce a shorter academic written text in French and assess that of others.

Assessment

The course is assessed continuously through oral presentations at seminars and written assignments.

Forms of Study

The course consists of lectures and seminars. The seminars are central to the course and students are expected to participate actively. Instruction is in French.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade VG for the whole course, VG is required in both modules.

Module 1: Method - 2.5 cr
Module 2: Academic writing - 5 cr

Prerequisites

  • 60 credits in French, including the courses French Written Proficiency II, 7.5 credits, French Literature II: Up to 1900, 7.5 credits on First cycle level 1 and one of the courses French Linguistics and the History of the French Language, 7.5 credits or French: Introduction to linguistics, 7.5 credits on First cycle level 1, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required
