Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students shall be able to:

  • identify and explain the different grammatical problems in the French language
  • apply their knowledge of French grammar in their own written work in French
  • understand and summarize a longer text in French.

Students taking the course with contrastive focus shall in addition be able to:

  • explain the grammatical differences between French and Swedish, and apply their knowledge in the translation of prose
  • translate different types of texts from Swedish to French with linguistic certainty and stylistic ability.

Course Content

The course includes an in-depth study of French grammar. The course contains varied writing and grammar exercises, both controlled and freer in character, such as abstracts and article writing. For the contrastive option, there will also be translations.

Assessment

Written tests in grammar and continous examination by way of various written assignments.

Forms of Study

Teaching is both in the form of lectures and seminars. Teaching is in French.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required for module 1.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Writing and grammar - 5 cr
Module 2: The writing process - 2.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • 30 credits in French, including the course French Written Proficiency I, 7.5 credits First cycle level 1, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required

The course with contrastive focus can be part of the specialisation French in the teacher education programme at Dalarna University.
