Learning Outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge in a selected field in business administration, including an insight in to its scientific basis and in relevant research in that field (1)
  • identify and argue for a relevant research problem (2)
  • argue for the choice of a theoretical approach and a scientific method in order to handle the research problem (3)
  • search for, gather and critically interpret information collected using the chosen scientific method (4)
  • make an analysis and draw conclusions based on the research problem and the chosen theoretical approach (5)
  • write and orally present a thesis on their work in a clear and relevant way (6)
  • collaborate with others and show a high degree of independence in planning, conducting and reporting a study (7)
  • critically analyze and discuss other people‘s theses, and defend their own work (8)
  • demonstrate a critical and reflective approach to their work and in relation to social and ethical issues (9)

Course Content

In this course, students should demonstrate that they can independently identify a research problem within the field and are able to plan and carry out a study in a scientific manner. In supervision sessions and seminars, students are given the opportunity to discuss different ways to define and describe their research problem, choosing theoretical foundations, methods, and different data collection techniques. During the course, students will be trained to use models, to make conscious and explicit simplifications, to collect and analyze relevant information.


The final thesis have to be a report written in accordance with scientific principles. The thesis will be orally presented and defended at an opposition. Furthermore, students have to be the opponent of another thesis.

Assessment

Module 1 (examine 8): Written and oral presentation of the chosen thesis topic and being the opponent of others’ choice of topic, 0 credit
Module 2 (examine 8): Oral defense and being the opponent of written thesis draft, 0 credit
Module 3 (examine Objective 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9): Written thesis, 15 credits
Module 4 (examine Case 8): Oral presentation and defense of the final version of the thesis and opposition on another thesis, 0 credit

Lecture, tutorials and compulsory seminars.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

The course applies the grades Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with Distinction (VG).
The following ratings can be obtained:

Assignment 1, 2, 4: U, G
Assignment 3: U, G, VG

To pass the course students must obtain the grade G on all assignments. To pass the course with distinction (VG), VG is in addition required on assignment 3.

Prerequisites

  • 150 credits whereof at least 60 credits in the main field of Business Administration with 7,5 credits methods

Other Information

Number of exam attempts is limited to five. The thesis must be submitted at the time specified by the examiner. Assessment can only be done at specified examinations. If there are two authors on one thesis, each student should be prepared to give an account of their own contributions. If the paper has failed at two examinations, the thesis topic must be changed.
The ones admitted to and registered for the course are entitled to receive instruction and tutorials during the time specified for the course to which they were accepted.
Additions must be submitted no later than the time specified by the examiner.
The course replaces FÖ2013 and FÖ2018.
