Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe and compare different technologies for the storage of electricity,
  • describe and analyse the most important components and control principles of electronic power conversion,
  • calculate the storage capacity of different electrical storage technologies,
  • evaluate an electrical storage system and the performance of individual components.

Course Content

The course covers electrical energy storage and various types of electronic power conversion such as basic circuits of power electronics including AC-DC, DC-AC and DC-DC conversion. After an explanation the need for energy storage in both space and time, the course introduces the basics of electrical storage technologies such as electrochemical and electromechanical storage, hydrogen and fuel cells and pumped hydro storage. The course ends with the evaluation of a complete battery energy storage system.

Assessment

  • Laboratory work
  • Assignments which are assessed individually

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Laboratory report - 2 Credits | U–G
  • Assignments - 3 Credits | U–VG

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree with the main field of study in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy engineering or engineering physics and English 6
