Learning Outcomes

The overall aim of this course is that the student should acquire the ability to relate relevant research and theories to their own experiences of the field of professional communication and reflect on how their own abilith can be improved..

After completing the course the student be able to:

  • describe and give examples of how a professional attitude affects conversations at work and in the workplace.
  • evaluate conversation techniques, and practical action, and relate to different situations, with support from the literature.
  • evaluate the attitudes in professional conversations (such as guidance, a focus on solutions, coaching), and relate the choice of method and practical actions to different situations.
  • evaluate specific types of professional conversations in the workplace (such as difficult conversations, performance reviews), as well as practical actions and relate to different situations and give suggestions for how people’s abilities can be improved.
  • summarize and justify their views on how professional conversations should be conducted in different situations, with support in the literature and course content as a whole.

Course Content

The course covers what a professional approach is, based on the concepts of values, empathy and roles. The importance of body language and the ability to communicate on a meta level are reviewed. Different conversations techniques such as active listening, asking questions and feedback are addressed and practiced. Also discussed and practiced are different approaches and methods for conversations such as a focus on solutions, counseling, coaching, difficult conversations and performance reviews.
