Methods for Evidence-Based Nursing I

The overall goal is for students to be able to display knowledge and understanding of the scientific foundation for evidence based nursing. The students will also be able to display the ability to apply systematic search for information and compilation of scientific knowledge in the field of nursing. The course also include students ability to appraise ethical principles in research.

After completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • review the meaning of the concepts of evidence- and experience-based care, theory of knowledge and science
  • display understanding of the steps included in the process of research
  • display understanding of the significance of following ethical principles in research
  • explain the characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research methods regarding problem formulation, and methods of selection, data collection and analysis
  • review basic statistical concepts and descriptive statistical results
  • summarize and discuss methods and content of scientific research articles
  • independently apply the ability to search for scientific information and use accepted writing guidelines and reference management system
  • systematically compile scientific knowledge in a limited area of nursing
  • reflect on the importance of systematically compiled scientific knowledge in the field of nursing

Access to a computer (Not a mini pc, tablet or similar) that is not older than two years (or equivalent) and broadband connection, at least 2 Mbit/s (not mobile broadband, because mobile broadband can vary considerably in speed).

Means of Education:

Higher rate of web-based communication where our learning platform (Learn/Canvas) is a natural element of the course. Web-based meetings with sound and image where simple presentations can be held. Lectures can be broadcast live or can alternatively be made available afterwards online.
