Learning outcomes for the course

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe central historical events and fundamental Chinese traditional thinking such as Confucianism and Taoism
  • describe Chinese dialects and discuss their relation to standardised language
  • reflect on how the characteristics of Chinese culture are represented in the language system and in language use
  • describe Chinese gender norms from the 20th century to present-day China, and critically discuss the dimension of gender in Chinese society
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of Chinese culture.
