Older Adults Living Conditions

The overall objective of the course is that students shall gain a deeper understanding on ageing from social gerontological theories and perspectives, and how different factors on individual-, group, and community level may affect older persons’ living conditions.

Knowledge and understanding

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Present and discuss principal social gerontological theories, perspectives, and research on aging and older adults.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and discuss ageing and older adults’ living conditions, health, and functional ability in relation to factors on an individual-, group- and community level.

Competence and skills

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify and problematize ethical dilemmas in relation to, as professional, meeting older adults and their next of kin.
  • Identify and problematize the importance of intersectional perspectives in relation to older adults’ living conditions, wellbeing, and health.

Judgement and approach

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate and reflect on the importance of dignity, integrity, and autonomy from the older adult’s perspective.
  • Reflect critically on their own professional role and the importance of professional treatment of older adults and their next of kin.

Entry Qualifications :
  • By the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare issued Registered Nurse and Bachelor Degree in nursing, or a minimum of 180 credits with at least 90 credits in nursing science which 15 credits comprise a thesis
