SEAL-JOINT: Enhancing durability and long-term watertightness of casing joints for pre-insulated district heating pipes

SEAL-JOINT strengthens heat supply security by improving casing joints of pre-insulated district heating pipes under dynamic operational condition.

Description

Casing joints are critical interfaces ensuring watertight protection of the insulation, but they are also one of the most common sources of failures due to installation variability, material aging by thermo-mechanical stresses. The project investigates durability and performance of different casing joint solutions, including commercial shrink-sleeve, electro-fusion joints and a novel self-sealing and self-healing hydronic coating based on polymer/graphene microcapsule system. Through accelerated aging and joint performance testing aligned with SS-EN 489-1 procedure, SEAL-JOINT will validate coating solutions that autonomously mitigate cracking and moisture ingress. The results will improve joint testing and quality assurance methods, contributing to more robust and reliable Swedish district heating infrastructure.
