The future of public transport – autonomous transport in mountain destinations (the SIKTA project)

The SIKTA project explores how autonomous electric buses can contribute to the future of sustainable public transport. In the Sälen mountain region, the technology is being tested in real traffic and winter conditions.

Description

The SIKTA Project

SIKTA is a collaborative research and innovation project exploring how autonomous electric buses can contribute to sustainable mobility in rural areas and tourism destinations.

Test environment

The project is being tested in the Sälen mountain region, operating between Hundfjället and Tandådalen, where autonomous buses are being evaluated in winter conditions.

Purpose

  • Test autonomous buses in a mountain environment and on winter roads
  • Develop and evaluate solutions in real-world operation
  • Explore the interaction between mobility services and the tourism industry

Running from 2025 to 2027, the project is led by Malung-Sälen Municipality in close collaboration with Älvdalen Municipality.
