Originally from Stockholm, hockey and skiing enthusiast Johanna moved to Dalarna in the autumn of 2021. Drawn here by both a unique study programme and a vibrant sports and outdoor environment, she didn’t hesitate to accept her place and start a new chapter in Falun.
Strong commitment to listening to students
It was while in the Sports Management Programme, during which time she combined studies with volunteer work in the student union, that Johanna’s interest in campus life grew. In 2024, she joined the student union board as deputy chairperson, a role that encouraged her to take on greater responsibility. Ahead of the 2025/26 academic year, she was elected chairperson by union members – a position she enthusiastically and proudly assumed on July 1:
– It feels really good, and I’m honoured to have the trust of our students. Working at a student union is a unique experience where you get to work with and for students, which is something I am passionate about contributing to. Being able to give back to current students after having had such a fun and educational time here myself is incredibly rewarding, says Johanna.
From social activities to mental health – the union works for all students
For those unfamiliar with the student union, what do you do, and what is your purpose?
– We’re here for all students at the university, and our mission is twofold: to monitor the quality of education and to enhance student life through our social activities. Students can get involved in many ways, from attending our events to joining the board or representing other students. Everyone is welcome.
Which issues will be important for you to pursue as chairperson of Dalarna’s Student Union?
– In the last academic year, the student union launched a mental health campaign, and we received a great many responses to our survey. This is something I want to continue working on now that I am chairperson. In addition, we aim to get more students involved in the union, both on campus and remotely.
Welcoming new students Next week, the introduction begins – what can new students expect?
– Two weeks filled with fun activities, a sense of community, and a chance to meet new people. These weeks are planned and run thanks to student volunteers who work hard to ensure a meaningful introduction for all new students.”
Why is it important to take part in the introduction?
– It’s a great way to meet others who are also new. Social connections are a big part of your time at university and something we consider vital for well-being. Many of our students move here from different cities and countries and may not know anyone yet.
What is your best tip for new students to get a good start at university?
– Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be sure to plan your study time. If you plan well, you’ll have more time for fun things and can avoid unnecessary stress.
