Proficiency Test - Italian

The placement test is intended for students who have learned Italian in other ways but do not hold Swedish upper-secondary school or university credits in the language. If you have such credits, you should not take the test but instead apply for the courses based on your existing qualifications.

To qualify for the placement test, you must either have lived or worked in Italy for at least six months, or have completed Italian language courses amounting to at least 50 hours of instruction and be able to provide a certificate as proof.

Please note that if you have already taken a university course in Italian, even if several years ago, you do not need to take the placement test. In that case, you will automatically be eligible for courses corresponding to your previous studies. If you consider that your language skills have significantly declined over time, we recommend that you re-enrol in the same course.

Students who are native speakers of Italian or who have completed at least 13 years of schooling in Italy should not take the test. Instead, they must contact Senior Lecturer Gianluca Colella (gco@du.se)

Note: The test is free of charge.

Placement Test – Structure and Procedure

The test consists of two parts:

  • a written exam conducted digitally (online)
  • an oral exam conducted via Zoom (online).

The oral exam is only given to students who pass the written exam. Therefore, the time and Zoom link for the oral exam will only be sent after the written exam has been assessed.

Based on the test results, we will determine whether you can begin with Beginners’ Course I or II, or whether you qualify for Italian A-courses at the undergraduate level.

Information about the Placement Test

The placement test is offered once per month.

Written exam

  • The exam has a time limit of two hours.
  • You must have access to a computer with a stable internet connection and a quiet environment without disturbances.
  • You do not need headphones or a webcam.

A few days before the test, you will receive an email from technical staff with practical information, including a link to the digital exam. This email will be sent to the address you provided at registration.

After the written exam, a teacher will contact you. If you have passed, you will receive both the time and Zoom link for the oral exam.

Registration for the Test

To register, send an email to Senior Lecturer Vera Nigrisoli Wärnhjelm (vnw@du.se).

In the email, you must clearly describe how you acquired your knowledge of Italian and provide documentation as proof.

Registration must be completed no later than five working days before the scheduled exam date.

If you are unable to attend after registering, you must notify us at least two working days before the exam. Failure to do so will mean that you must wait until the next semester to register again.
