Tuition fees: who pays and how much

Find out who needs to pay tuition fees, how much they are, what is included, and why they are required.

You must pay tuition fees if:

  • You are not a citizen of the EU/EEA or Switzerland

You do not need to pay tuition fees if:

  • You are a citizen of the EU/EEA or Switzerland or
  • You are admitted through an exchange programme

Tuition fees are charged per semester. For most programmes, the fee is the same each semester.

The exact tuition fee for your studies is shown on your Notification of Selection Results and in your invoice in Ladok.

Tuition fees for courses

Tuition fees for courses are based on subject area and number of credits.

Each subject area has a set fee per credit. If a course includes more than one subject area, the tuition fee is calculated based on the proportion of each subject area.

Tuition fees cover:

  • Teaching and supervision
  • Licenses for software used in courses as well as Office 365
  • Study visits when these are part of a course
  • Course materials provided by the university
  • Access to university facilities, including labratories and digital systems

Tuition fees do not cover:

  • Accommodation
  • Living expenses
  • Course literature 

The Swedish government ordinance (2010:543) mandates that a person who is not a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland must pay tuition fees for studying at a higher education institution in Sweden.

Tuition fees are based on the funding level for Swedish students, with an additional amount to cover costs such as administration, marketing, scholarships, and support services for fee-paying students.

Do I need to pay tuition fees?

Are there any tuition fee waivers?

No. Tuition fees vary depending on the subject area and the length of the programme.
Are tuition fees different for programmes and courses?
Yes. Programme fees are charged per semester, while course fees are based on subject area and credits.

What do tuition fees cover?
Tuition fees cover teaching, supervision, and access to university facilities and systems, but not living expenses or accommodation.

What happens if my fee status changes?
If you become exempt from tuition fees (for example due to a change in residence permit status), your tuition fee requirement may change for courses that have not yet been invoiced.
